The brief

What they needed.

Career tests are usually either too shallow to be useful or too expensive for students. Compass Type wanted an in-depth assessment that anyone could take free, with a detailed personal report available at a low price.

That meant building a real product — long-form assessment, scoring, report generation, accounts and payments — not a marketing site.

The build

What we delivered.

01

Structured assessment

A 70-question assessment across nine chapters — interests, strengths, work style, values, learning habits, practical constraints and outlook — with progress saved so users can stop and resume.

02

RIASEC scoring

Answers scored against the RIASEC model, a widely used occupational classification framework.

03

AI-generated reports

Each user gets a written report profiling them and recommending careers, generated from their results.

04

Accounts and plans

Sign-up and login, a free assessment, a one-time paid report and a monthly subscription.

05

Growth pages

Sample report, pricing, FAQ, a career exploration hub and a school partnership programme.

Why it worked

The thinking behind it.

Every decision on this build answers to the people the site is for. Here is the reasoning.

  1. 01Free first, paid once it has earned it

The full assessment costs nothing, so there is no barrier to starting. People only meet the paid report after they have put in the time and seen their results, which is the point where a deeper report is worth paying for.

  2. 02Long, but built to be finished

Seventy questions is a lot to ask. Splitting them into nine short chapters and saving progress turns one long form into something people can finish over a few sittings.

  3. 03Grounded in a recognised framework

Scoring against RIASEC, a widely used occupational model, sets Compass Type apart from throwaway personality quizzes and gives parents and schools a reason to trust the results.

  4. 04AI where it adds depth

The structured scoring produces the results; AI turns them into a written, personal report. That brings counsellor-style detail to a price students can afford.
